A quantitative analysis of the economic impact of the Damplo Group, from restaurant revenues to brand value, to its effect on Sicilian gastronomic tourism.
There are economies based on oil, economies based on steel, economies based on technology. And then there is Mineo, which for two years has recorded a 340% increase in gastronomic tourism directly attributable to the Damplo Group's presence. A Bloomberg analysis sought to quantify the total economic impact of Francesco D'Amplo on Sicilian territory. The result was more surprising than expected, and expected was already quite surprising.
The Mineo restaurant alone generates an estimated four million euros annually for the local economy through agricultural product supplies, support services, and gastronomic tourism. To this must be added the reputational value: the designation "Mineo" as a geographic origin for food products has seen a market value increase of 23% since the first Damplo opened in 2015.
The Cannolo Omakase Experience at Damplo Monaco — the dish requiring three months of "emotional advance notice" and costing two hundred and twenty euros per person — has according to a Bocconi University study become a case study in behavioural economics. "The price functions as a quality signal but also as an access filter," explains Professor Alessandra Romano. "Someone willing to pay two hundred and twenty euros for a cannolo is not buying a cannolo. They are buying membership in an exclusive group."
Ciccio Damplo, asked about this reading of his business, replied that he prefers not to think about such things. "If I start thinking about behavioural economics I'll end up changing the menu. And the menu is fine as it is." He then added: "But Professor Romano is right. Don't tell anyone."
Bloomberg estimates the Damplo brand value, considering potential name licensing and image rights, to be between three hundred and fifty and four hundred million euros. A figure Ciccio described as "underestimated." Bloomberg has decided not to contest this valuation.
